A Kansas couple is accused of fraudulently collecting more than $215,000 in pension benefits on behalf of the woman’s deceased father while hiding his body in their home for six years, NBC reported.
Authorities said Mike Carroll’s pacemaker showed he died in 2016 at age 81, but Overland Park police didn’t find his body until 2022, when his son-in-law, Kirk Ritter, called the police to report his death in suburban Kansas City.
Prosecutors say Lynn Ritter and Kirk Ritter, both 61, continued to deposit and spend from Carroll’s bank account even as his body was mummified on a bed at the home of Lynn Ritter, Carol’s daughter.
Relatives of the family repeatedly asked the couple to give them the opportunity to speak with Carroll on the phone, but the accused always made up some excuse, leaving the impression that he was still alive.
The couple is scheduled to appear in federal court on February 2. The pensions and welfare payments Carroll received in the six years since his death totaled $216,067. But bank records from that time show checks written from his bank account and cashed by Lynn and Kirk Ritter.
