The Kansas City Chiefs’ fans have become one of the most dominant in the NFL inside and outside of Arrowhead Stadium. The joy and celebration of the league was present in the city, where just a few months ago a shooting overshadowed the celebrations of the two-time champions.
The team led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes is not only strong on the field, but its dominance in the stands has also spread to other countries. In the game where the Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens 27-20, their stadium surrendered to a duo that promises to form a dynasty in the league.
With less than 20 seconds on the clock, Lamar Jackson had a couple of chances to send the game into overtime for Baltimore. On one of those occasions, he missed his receiver with an inaccurate pass, and on the last play of the game, Isaiah Likely caught what looked like the game-tying touchdown, but upon review, the officials ruled that the toe of one of his feet was out of bounds.
Amid a deafening noise caused by the desire to open a new season, thousands of people of all ages dressed in red and white jerseys came to see the Chiefs in a campaign that could be historic for the franchise, becoming the first team to lift three consecutive Vince Lombardi trophies. Pop star Taylor Swift was once again present in the stadium’s box as in the previous season in support of her boyfriend Travis Kelce.
From the first game, the explosiveness of their new offensive weapon was evident. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who was the fastest in pre-draft testing, ran 40 yards in 4.21 seconds, scored twice for Kansas, one of them after a reverse pass from Patrick Mahomes in the first quarter and the other coming in the fourth period.
The Baltimore Ravens struggled to stop Mahomes and the idea of revenge for the last AFC final seemed lost. With the home-grown specialty, running back Derrick Henry put John Harbaugh’s team ahead and kicker Justin Tucker added additional points to the scoreboard but the attempts to tie the game were not enough.
