Monday Night of the ninth day of the NFL saw the Buccaneers (4-4) visit the Chiefs (7-0), reigning champions and the only team still undefeated. The visiting team, in addition to Godwin and Evans, also had to do without another WR, the rookie McMillan, leaving Mayfield and the aerial game in general even poorer in targets. Even in the Kansas City ranks the heaviest absences were in attack with Smith-Schuster (WR) and Edwards-Helaire (RB) unavailable due to injury.
Tampa had to demonstrate, against an undefeated team, that they could play the game, especially with a defense that had appeared in serious difficulty in recent games, while the Chiefs aimed to keep their seasonal defeat column at zero.

The Chiefs (8-0) risked losing their unbeaten streak but were able to rely on their stars and find the path to comeback that led them to success. Mahomes (34/44, 291 yards, 3 TDs and zero interceptions with 4 sacks suffered) dictated the pace of his attack by finding his targets; Hunt (106 yards in 27 carries with 1 TD) gave consistency to the running game while at the same time taking all the defense’s attention away from Mahomes. Kelce (14 receptions for 100 yards) was the usual, reliable target of the Kansas City QB’s throws; excellent performance by Hopkins (8 receptions, 86 yards and 2 TDs) who demonstrated his full value. The attack as a whole performed well, as demonstrated by the 28 first downs, (against Tampa’s 17) the statistics on third downs played (12/18, 66.7%) and the one in the red zone (4/4 100 %). On defense, the best tackler was LB Tranquill (7 tackles, 0.5 sack and 1 QH) with the unit that kept the Buccaneers’ attack under 300 yards despite not causing any turnover in their favor.
The Buccaneers (4-5) once again highlighted major problems in defense and blackouts in scoring which heavily penalize the Florida franchise. Mayfield (23/31 for 200 yards, 2 TDs and 0 interceptions with 2 sacks suffered) played a game free from big errors, not throwing interceptions as happened in recent games; despite the lack of Godwin, Evans and McMillan he found his favorite and safest target in TE Otton (8 receptions for 77 yards and 1 TD); good performance also from Shepard (48 receiving yards and 21 rushing) with Palmer and Jarrett little involved in the game. The running game did not offer any major alternatives to the aerial game, with the White-Irving-Tucker trio totaling only 54 yards in 13 courses, with 1 TD (White). Defensively the best, once again, were Winfield (12 tackles) and Vea (10 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss
