Kansas City Chiefs announce: We want to play in Germany!

The Kansas City Chiefs plan to host a game in Germany in the near future. Team President Mark Donovan announced this in a conversation with German journalists.

“We want to get started right away in 2022, for example as part of the Super Bowl, the Pro Bowl, the Draft,” said Donovan about the commitment his franchise is aiming for in Germany. “And of course we really hope that we will get the opportunity to play in Germany!”

“Even if we’re not at this Germany game next year, we want to celebrate football there. We want to be there for our fans – and for all football fans in Germany,” the 55-year-old continued. “With these campaigns we want to increase our value, perception and interest. With the fans and of course also possible business partners – I’m also talking about German companies that see the opportunity to become more present on the US market.”

The Chiefs secured the marketing rights for the NFL in Germany this week, along with the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. From next year onwards, the four franchises will be able to operate in a similar manner in Germany as they are in the USA in their hometown.

Chiefs: “Relationship with Bayern Munich” is a factor

“Our good relationship with Bayern Munich naturally plays a major role in our efforts. But also the enthusiasm of the German fans for football,” said Donovan, explaining the Chiefs’ interest in Germany. “Despite our proximity to Bayern, our focus is not only on Munich, but on the entire German market. Of course we would be happy if the Germany game takes place in Munich, but also if the game increases in Frankfurt or Düsseldorf.”

In 2022, by 2023 at the latest, an NFL game is to be played in Germany for the first time. The league published a shortlist of possible venues in October. According to this, only Munich, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf are considered as hosts.
