Philippine Volcano on High Alert After Ash Emissions
Kanlaon Volcano on the Negros Island in the Philippines has erupted twice in quick succession, raising concerns about a potential major eruption. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is closely monitoring the situation after the volcano spewed ash twice on Monday morning.
The first eruption occurred around 7:46 AM local time and lasted for seven minutes, followed by a second eruption lasting 14 minutes beginning at 8:16 AM. Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol described the eruptions, saying, “These events generated grayish plumes that rose 400-600 meters above the crater before drifting northwest and north-northwest as recorded by the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory.”
These episodes mark a significant escalation in the volcano’s activity, prompting Phivolcs to elevate its alert level to 2. This signifies a moderate level of unrest and indicates that an eruption could happen at any time.
"That’s why it is still under Alert Level 2," Bacolcol stated.
Phivolcs is urging caution for those living near Kanlaon Volcano, reminding them that "an eruption may take place anytime."
While scientists monitor the volcano for further activity, the recent events serve as a stark reminder of the potent geological forces at play in the Philippines.
