Johanna Rytting Kaneryd believes her first goal against Tottenham, a successful first-time volley, was the best of her career so far.
With 70 minutes on the clock, Kaneryd met Millie Bright’s cross with a diving volley, her shot flying across goal past helpless goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.
That goal brought the score to 3-1, with Chelsea finally ran out 5-2 hitters over their cross-town rivals.
Speaking at full-time, Kaneryd said: “The first goal was probably the best I’ve scored so far in my career so I’m very happy about that.
She was just as happy with her second goal, a solo effort finished off with a powerful left-footed strike.
“The second one with my left hand is something I’ve been working on, and it’s still working so I’ll keep doing that,” she laughed.
While the final score read heavily for Chelsea in the end, the first half was fairly even. Chelsea they struggled to settle into the game, making a number of possession errors as they buckled under intense pressure from Tottenham.
For Kaneryd, it was manager Sonia Bompastor’s half-time pep talk that helped Chelsea find the way.
When asked what Bompastor identified as the main theme, she said, “Definitely the intensity, it’s something that has been a struggle this season.
When they visited us we lost a bit of confidence, and tonight I think we didn’t do that. It was about finding the best rhythm in the game, when to go high, when to go low, I think we did well in the second half. We felt confident, really chasing another goal.”
With the international break approaching, she is not too stressed about Chelsea’s form. Still undefeated both domestically and across the continent this season, she believes the team will be ready to continue after some time apart.
“It’s always a challenge coming back from the internationals, there’s not a lot of training together before a game, so it’s about preparation for us. I mean I’m not thinking too much about that now, I’ll focus on the internationals first, but then I feel really confident in the team at the moment and We have a very good feeling so I don’t think too much about it. “
