Captain of the England national team Harry Kane will still wear the rainbow captain’s armband or One Love against Iran World Cup 2022Monday (11/21).
England coach Gareth Southgate confirmed it directly on Sunday, local time. England did not heed the threat that FIFA would have sent if the action was carried out.
“We’ve made it clear as a team, as a staff and as an organization that we want to wear the armband,” said Southgate.
“The FA are talking to FIFA right now and I’m sure we will make a decision tomorrow [Senin 21 November]”, added Southgate.
The rainbow captain’s armband represents support for equal rights that aren’t just for LGBTQ. However, this action has met with opposition because homosexuality is illegal in Qatar.
FIFA has said it supports the Qatari government’s regulation of banning LGBT campaigns. FIFA has even threatened to ask the referee to give players wearing the rainbow captain’s armband a yellow card before kick-off at the 2022 World Cup.
Kane is not alone, many other countries are planning to wear a rainbow captain tub in Qatar. They are the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales.
England manager Gareth Southgate does not want to play by the rules in Qatar. As well as wearing the rainbow captain’s armband, England will also take a knee before kick-off.
The action of kneeling in the middle of the pitch has been performed by Premier League players for two years now. It was a form of solidarity as well as a protest over the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police.
