Kamp Waes Episode 5 Recap: Alpha Animals Behave Like Slugs, Victims and Casualties

The heaviest physical work is done in Camp Waes. But when the six remaining alpha animals suddenly behave like a gang of slugs in episode five, there are still victims.

What was on the programme?

Day five of Kamp Waes starts with some gentle morning gymnastics. Still at an unchristian early hour, but the six remaining candidates don’t seem to care. They can visit the physiotherapist one by one to help alleviate minor ailments and stiff muscles. Candidates can contact Tom Waes with their mental concerns. Jan Dolfijn appears to be in quite deep there. And as any marine biologist can tell you, this is never a good sign with such a beast.

Then it is time to put the gray matter of the candidates to work. A crash course in special forces should prepare them for their very first mission. The theory is also put into practice with a few exercises that focus primarily on collaboration. A sore point, as it turns out. Or to put it in the words of operator Ralph: ‘Our grandma would have done better.’

By having the candidates list who they would and would rather not spend quality time in a trench with, Fly and co. to gain a better insight into the group processes. But the division of tasks that results from this the next day also does not make any difference. The collaboration between the six survivors remains as difficult as the father-son conversations between King Charles and Prince Harry.

Did Fly have any surprises in store?

This time, the Chief Smurf of Camp Waes does not conjure up any nightly excursions, endless hikes or screaming paratroopers. This time the demolition work focuses mainly on the mental level. When evaluating the group work of his recruits, Fly is very sharp. The alpha animals he had hoped for actually turned out to be a gang of slugs, he said. After which he fires his arrows at a few of these slimy creatures. Jan in particular has a hard time. “There is a word for people like you,” says Fly. “Pedant.” And then make it even worse by also giving a painful definition of that word. “That means you have a know-it-all opinion about everything.” A figurative uppercut that sinks Jan Dolfijn to the bottom of the sea in one fell swoop. And as any marine biologist can tell you, that is not the place where these animals feel best.

Who made the biggest impression?

Let’s have a collective off day. Even superman Dries Borstlap fails to excel this time. Although we suspect the instructors of boycotting him on purpose, just to avoid making a fool of yourself. After all, the man who is physically miles above the rest is promoted to communications manager by the special forces. A position where he has to do something unclear with a radio miles away from where the action is taking place. The biggest waste of talent since Roberto Martinez decided to keep Jérémy Doku on the bench during the World Cup.

Were there any casualties?

It was the chronicle of an announced farewell. At the Tender Feet it was already a challenge for Jan, but in the end it was not a lack of physical qualities that cost the oldest (52 years old) participant his head. Although every marine biologist will praise the social qualities of dolphins, in this specimen they turned out to be rather disappointing. After just three group assignments, Jan has antagonized the entire group. A performance that makes the special forces decide to put him out of his misery.

Who is on their last legs?

Hard to say. None of the candidates do a very good job in this episode. And Jan’s exit shows that things can go wrong at any time. If we have to mention a name, then perhaps Jolan’s. “I should have opened my mouth a little more,” he concludes after the scolding he receives from Fly. It’s up to him to prove that he is indeed an alpha animal and not a slug.
