Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris said Wednesday that recently released comments about Donald Trump‘s admiration for Adolf Hitler offer a window into who the former president “really” is and the kind of commander in chief he would be.
In interviews with The New York Timesy The Atlantic published Tuesday, John Kelly, who served as the Trump administration’s longest-serving chief of staff in the White House, warned that the Republican candidate fits the definition of a fascist and that while in office he suggested that the leader Nazi Adolf Hitler “did some good things.”
Kelly recalled an occasion when Trump brought up the idea of needing “German generals,” to which Kelly asked him if he meant “Bismarckian generals,” referring to Otto von Bismarck, the chancellor behind the unification of Germany.
“Surely you’re not referring to Hitler’s generals,” Kelly claims Trump asked him. To which the former president responded: “Yes, yes, to Hitler’s generals.”
Harris regretted those statements and on Wednesday repeated her warnings about Trump’s mental fitness and his intentions for the presidency.
“This is a window (to see) who Donald Trump really is from the perspective of the people who know him best, from the people who have worked with him side by side in the Oval Office and in the Situation Room,” Harris said. to journalists at the doors of the residence for the vice presidents in Washington.
Harris claimed that Trump admired Hitler’s generals because “He doesn’t want an Army that is loyal to the Constitution of the United States, he wants an Army that is loyal to him. “He wants an Army that is loyal to him personally.”
The Harris campaign held a call with reporters Tuesday to elevate the voices of retired military personnel who highlighted how many of the officers who worked with Trump now oppose his campaign.
“The people who know him best are the most opposed to him, to his presidency,” said retired Army Brigadier General Steve Anderson.
