Kamala Harris secures votes for Democratic nomination in US – 2024-08-05 02:39:34

US Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough delegate votes to secure the presidential nomination, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Jaime Harrison announced Friday.

However, the results will not be official until Monday evening, when the DNC reports on the process at the close of virtual voting for delegates to the Democratic National Convention taking place from August 19 to 22 in Chicago, Illinois.

“I will officially accept her nomination next week, once the virtual voting process closes, but I am happy to know that we have enough delegates to secure the nomination,” Harris said on a call with supporters organized by her campaign, where Harrison broke the news.

Harris would thus be the first African-American and Native American woman in national history to secure the presidential nomination of one of the two parties that have traditionally alternated in the White House every four years.

Democratic delegates are holding a rare pre-convention virtual vote to finalize her nomination before Ohio’s ballot access deadline next week so she has access to ballots in every state.

Harris is running unopposed for this new challenge after President Joe Biden withdrew from his re-election bid on July 21 and endorsed her as the most qualified person to reach the Oval Office.

Virtual voting for the convention’s approximately 4,700 delegates began yesterday morning.

Delegates will conduct a “ceremonial and confirmatory” roll call vote in person at the convention, under the party’s newly adopted rules, but the nomination will become official once virtual voting ends next week.

Harris’ team says it raised $310 million in July, more than double what Republican rival Donald Trump’s team announced.
