After several months of stagnation, the American presidential campaign is regaining momentum. Now officially a candidate for the White House, Kamala Harris is expected to name his running mate this Tuesday, August 6before embarking on a multi-day tour of key states for the election. The first stop for Donald Trump’s new rival duo is a first tandem meeting in Pennsylvania, one of the key territories that favored Joe Biden’s election in 2020.
But who will be chosen? Among the candidates, the governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, 51, is the favorite. Other names are also circulating, such as Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota with an atypical career, and Mark Kelly, a former astronaut who became a senator from Arizona. Andy Beshear, governor of Kentucky, or the current Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, are also mentioned, but with much less insistence in recent hours than that of Josh Shapiro. None of these names have been confirmed, however.
While normally, the nomination of a running mate takes several months, Joe Biden’s sudden withdrawal will have accelerated things. In mid-July, a few days after being the victim of an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump had chosen as his running mate JD Vance, a 40-year-old senator from Ohio, another industrial state in the northeast. The latter, who has not made things easy for the Republican candidate by chaining controversies, is expected to begin a tour in the same territories as the Democratic duo, in order to pull the rug out from under their feet.
