US Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris leads Republican rival Donald Trump by five points in national voting intention, according to a survey conducted after Tuesday’s televised debate.
The Ipsos study shows voting intention for Kamala Harris at 47% versus 42% for the Republican, with a margin of error of three percentage points.
The gap between the two grew by one point, to five points, compared to the last Ipsos survey conducted at the end of August.
The new poll, with a sample of 1,690 people, was conducted between September 11 and 12, following the September 10 debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In that meeting, broadcast by ABC, the Democrat was calm and presidential against an irritated and defensive Republican who was corrected on several occasions by the moderators to refute some of his false reports.
Fifty-two percent of those surveyed by Ipsos believe Kamala Harris won the debate, while only 21% believe Donald Trump performed better.

Vice President Harris’ aggressive performance at Tuesday’s presidential debate with former President Trump in Philadelphia electrified her grassroots supporters and helped her land the coveted endorsement of Taylor Swift and raise a staggering $47 million in the 24 hours following the debate.
But in every speech Kamala Harris has given since Tuesday’s showdown, the vice president has warned her supporters that the race will remain tight until the final days.
She and her advisers have repeatedly highlighted the obstacles facing Democrats, from Republican efforts to restrict the counting of certain ballots to the hundreds of millions of dollars that Trump-aligned super PACs plan to spend trying to paint Harris in as negative a light as possible.
“We know this is going to be a very close race down to the wire. We are the underdogs. Let’s be clear about that,” Harris said in Greensboro. “We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we like hard work. Hard work is good work.”
Harris will have a chance to renew and harness that energy within her party next week when she participates in a livestreamed event with Oprah Winfrey, the television icon who made a surprise appearance at last month’s Democratic National Convention.
The event is expected to bring together more than 140 grassroots groups that have emerged since Harris took office as the Democratic nominee, such as Latinas for Harris and White Dudes for Harris.
