Kamala Harris’ campaign team announced that it raised $310 million in July, more than twice the total amount in relation to the money raised by Donald Trump, most of which has been raised since the vice president replaced Joe Biden in November’s presidential election.
As funding plays an important role in US election campaigns, with sums often astronomical, the new Democratic candidate raised $200 million in less than a week after the July 21 withdrawal of Joe Biden.
Kamala Harris’ team “collect 310 million dollars in July, the biggest fundraiser for the 2024 election”her campaign team announced in a press release.
This fundraising “fueled by the best month of small-donor fundraising in US presidential election history” and represents “more than double” amount compared to that raised by Donald Trump’s campaign in the same month, the same source pointed out.
Trump less than half
The Republican candidate’s team announced Thursday in a press release that it has collected $138.7 million in July, an amount raised the month Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt and received a triumphant welcome at the Republican convention.
The dizzying sums of US election campaigns are largely spent on very expensive advertising spots presenting the candidates’ track record and promises. The internet and television networks are “flooded” by such spots in the months before the elections.
The NGO Open Secrets, which specializes in political financing, estimates that the 2024 election could be the most expensive in American history, surpassing the record of 5.7 billion dollars (about 5.2 billion euros) that had been spent on the election 2020 showdown.
