Kamala Harris: “Closes the gap” with Trump on the economy – 2024-08-28 17:55:36

Donald Trump’s lead over Kamala Harris on the economy and fighting crime appears to be waning among American voters, a sign that the vice president and Democratic nominee’s campaign is gaining new momentum ahead of the Nov. 5 election. according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The poll was conducted between August 23-25 and shows that 43% of registered voters favor Trump’s approach on the economy and immigration. 40% choose Harris’ policy. The 3-point difference is too small to be considered significant, given the poll’s margin of error is plus/minus 4 points. An earlier Reuters/Ipsos poll in late July showed Trump leading by 11 points on the economy.

When it comes to cracking down on crime and corruption, Harris and Trump are tied at 40%. In the July poll Trump was considered better in this area, with a difference of 5 points from his opponent.

Recent national polls show Harris holding a slight lead over Trump after entering the race on July 21, following President Joe Biden’s decision to retire and not seek a second term. The Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Harris’s share has risen by one point to 43 percent.

It remains to be seen how independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy’s decision to drop out and endorse Donald Trump will affect the campaign. In the July poll, about 8% of voters said they would support Kennedy.

In his speeches, Trump often criticizes the Biden administration for its handling of the economy, as households continue to feel the effects of high inflation. The new poll shows that the issue of most concern to registered voters is the economy (26%), followed by political extremism and threats to democracy (22%) and immigration (13%).

Where Harris excels

Voters think Harris would be more effective in fighting extremism than Trump (42% vs. 36%). Trump excels on immigration (45% to Harris’ 37%).

59% of voters also said they have an unfavorable view of Trump and 52% have an unfavorable view of Harris. 39% have a positive view of Trump and 47% of Harris.

The poll was conducted online among 1,028 adults, 902 of whom were registered voters.
