Latvian Gas Market Navigates Post-War challenges
The latvian natural gas market continues to grapple with the lingering effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Aigars Kalvītis, chairman of the board of latvijas gāze. While price volatility has lessened compared to the previous two years, the market remains dynamic, demanding proactive strategies from traders.
Despite a 13.6% increase in natural gas consumption in Latvia during the first ten months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023 (data from the Central Statistics Office), consumption hasn’t yet reached pre-war levels. This mirrors a broader trend across Europe.
“As an example, he cited the fact that natural gas prices reached their lowest point since June 2021 in March 2024, but have experienced an increase since then.At the same time, the price level is still substantially lower than in 2022 and 2023, creating more favorable conditions for consumers.”
Kalvītis emphasized the importance of experience and adaptability in navigating these fluctuating market conditions. “In such market conditions, the years of experience and knowledge of the natural gas market in Latvia and Europe, as well as the ability to be proactive in its operations in changing market conditions, play an importent role,” he stated. Maintaining high-quality service is also crucial, notably since the full opening of the household market on May 1, 2023. Despite increased competition, latvijas gāze has retained a important portion of its household customer base.
Looking ahead, Kalvītis anticipates significant challenges in 2025. Latvijas gāze plans to invest heavily in innovation and digitization to enhance service accessibility and offer more flexible, sustainable solutions to its customers.
The company’s 2023 turnover reached €159.819 million, a significant decrease of 4.4 times compared to 2022, when soaring natural gas prices resulted in a €56.911 million loss. This contrasts sharply with the profit recorded in 2021. Latvijas gāze’s share capital stands at €55.86 million. The company serves business and household customers across Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Finland.
The situation in Latvia highlights the broader challenges faced by European nations in securing reliable and affordable energy supplies in the wake of geopolitical instability. The ongoing need for diversification and energy independence remains a key focus for policymakers and energy companies alike.
