Kakao’s Stock Price Rebound: The Impact of ‘Cozy Pity 2.0’ and Declining Minority Shareholders

The key to the rebound of AI ‘Cozy Pity 2.0’ in October

As the sluggish stock price trend continued, the number of individual investors in ‘Kakao (035720) 3 brothers’ decreased by about 150,000 in the first six months of this year. The stock market is paying attention to whether the October release of ‘Cogpity 2.0’, a generative artificial intelligence (AI), will be a turning point in Kakao’s stock price rebound.

According to the Financial Supervisory Service’s electronic disclosure system on the 27th, as of the end of June, the number of minority shareholders (less than 1% stake) in Kakao was 1,999,126. Compared to 2,066,544 at the end of last year, 67,418 people decreased. Minority shareholders of KOSPI-listed Kakao Pay (377300) also decreased by 64,789 (798,773 → 733,984) and 17,017 (313,558 → 296,541) respectively this year. A total of 149,224 minority shareholders of the three Kakao brothers, which decreased in six months.

The securities industry believes that a significant number of minority shareholders have left the Kakao Group due to the stock price decline that lasted for nearly two years. The background of their share price decline is the sharp rise in interest rates and sluggish performance from last year to this year. Seo Jeong-yeon, a researcher at Shinyoung Securities, explained, “It is highly likely that the trend of Kakao’s operating profit will continue for the time being as AI-related investments have expanded more than originally expected and the recovery of the industry has been delayed.”

The market is keenly aware of whether Kakao’s generative AI model ‘Cogpity 2.0’, which is scheduled to be introduced after October, will be the key to a rebound in stock prices. Kim Ha-jeong, a researcher at Daol Investment & Securities, explained, “When the AI model is applied to existing businesses such as advertising, commerce, and content, a significant rebound in growth rate is expected.”

Meanwhile, the decrease in minority shareholders of Naver (NAVER (035420)) was smaller than that of Kakao Group stocks. At the end of the first half of the year, the number of minority shareholders in Naver was 1,033,170, a decrease of 18,438 from the end of last year.
