Callas was asked at Politico’s Defense Summit in Washington on Tuesday whether she would like to be considered for the post of NATO secretary general after current alliance leader Jens Stoltenberg steps down.
“A couple of days ago I heard a joke – the next secretary general should be from a new member state – “new” means 20 years in NATO -, it should definitely be from a country that spends 2% of its gross domestic product on defense, and it would be nice if it were a woman.
So it makes sense that it is [Nīderlandes premjerministrs] Mark Rite,” Kallas said with humor.
The moderator then asked Kallas if she would like to be considered for the position, and she said yes.
Stoltenberg’s mandate as NATO Secretary General will end on October 1, 2024.
