Compared to the game against FC Erzgebirge Aue, Dresden coach Guerino Capretti made no changes.
Dirk Schuster from 1. FC Kaiserslautern made three changes in his first game as coach of the Red Devils. Hikmet Cifit was out due to gastrointestinal problems, while Philipp Hercher was struggling with a muscular injury. Felix Götze first took a seat on the bench. Jean Zimmer, Daniel Hanslik and Julian Niehues played for it from the start.
The omens under which both teams went into the relegation games were very different. On the one hand the battered Saxons, who were without a win in the second half of the season. On the other hand FCK, who had the best record since the 2009/10 Bundesliga promotion season. After 36 games, the Red Devils had 18 wins and 63 points – and only conceded 27 goals.
Rarely does the term “goosebumps atmosphere” fit so well to a backdrop as in the clash between the two traditional clubs. Even before the game, there was deafening noise from the stands, and the Fritz-Walter-Stadion turned into a real madhouse when the whistle kicked off. Every action, no matter how small, was enthusiastically applauded – regardless of whether it was a dedicated tackle or a liberation.

There wasn’t much more to see in the first 45 minutes. The third division got into the game better at first and had the more active players in their own ranks in Marlon Ritter, Terrence Boyd and Mike Wunderlich. The only thing missing was compelling actions. By half-time, Lautern had shot once on goal, Dresden not once.
The majority of the actions were duels, intensive runs and counterattacks. In one of the direct duels, Paul Will was injured when he and Daniel Hanslik hit their heads. Will then had to leave the field injured, for Hanslik it went on. The change did not detract from the level of the game. It was harmless in front of both goals, Kenny Prince Redondo’s shot on target (29′), which substitute Yannick Stark was able to intercept at the last second, was the best opportunity in the first half.

After the change of sides, things were similarly dynamic and emotional, but still safe in front of the gates. Redondo’s (46′) and Boyd’s (50′) chances didn’t put pressure on Dynamo. On the other side, a cross from Agyemang Diawusie came too high for Christoph Daferner (47′). He still had a chance to head the ball in the 56th minute, but keeper Matheo Raab deflected the ball wide.

As a result, the high pace of the first round slowed down. Neither Kaiserslautern nor Dynamo Dresden was able to show the intensity over the entire duration. Individual actions repeatedly caused minor excitement, but nothing compelling was included. The 0:0 was the fair result overall.
Promotion and relegation will be decided in the second leg on Tuesday, May 24 (8:30 p.m.).
