Kai Havertz jumped to Thomas Muller’s defense after the German forward turned down a golden opportunity to rescue his team in the Euro 2020 round of 16 tie against England.
Wembley was still in celebration mode after Raheem Sterling’s opener in the 75th minute when the Manchester City star’s wayward pass gave Havertz a chance to put Muller on goal.
The Bayern Munich veteran, England’s tormentor during their infamous 4-2 loss to Germany in the 2010 World Cup, looked confident to score but dragged his shot agonizingly off Jordan Pickford’s right post.
Muller fell to his knees in disbelief and his mistake was compounded shortly thereafter when Harry Kane’s nosedive header confirmed a historic victory that sent England into the quarter-finals.
Reacting to Muller’s decisive failure, Chelsea star Havertz said: ‘No (he doesn’t usually miss those chances), but all the offensive players had good chances, so it’s not just about Thomas, it’s about everyone. , of the whole team.
“We could have created more opportunities, we didn’t, so it’s very difficult to take advantage of that. England have a good squad, good players. We have them too, of course, and we are very disappointed to lose the game, but we have to move on and it is difficult for us to accept.
Germany will now look to appoint a new head coach after Joachim Low’s long reign came to an end in agonizing circumstances.

On the 61-year-old’s imminent departure, Havertz added: “It is very difficult for us for Germany to be the best coach of all time. The whole country is proud of him, the players are proud of him.
“The race he has had is incredible and we are disappointed not to give him the best finish. Of course he is a great coach and a great person for all of us ”.
