Kagoshima City is bustling with shoppers preparing for the New Year as “Great Purification Ceremony” is held to remove the year’s worth of impurities at a department store[12/31 17:08]
On New Year’s Eve, a ceremony was held at a department store in Kagoshima City to cleanse away the year’s filth.
At Yamagataya, before the store opened for the last time this year, the annual “Great Purification Ceremony” was held, where people stroked their entire bodies with white paper called “dolls” to cleanse themselves of the year’s impurities.
This is the first time in four years that a regular event was held with approximately 1,000 employees, the first being in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic.
When the store opened, many customers came to buy Toshikoshi soba, New Year’s food, and other items.
Yamagataya’s first business will be on January 2nd.
