Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna: Controversy, Critique, and Conversation

‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ was a 2006 film directed by Karan Johar. Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta were cast in the film. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna was a much talked about movie due to the theme it dealt with and the period of its release.

Karan Johar has now opened up about Rani Mukerji’s husband and film distributor Aditya Chopra’s disagreement with the scene in which Rani Mukerji’s Maya and Dev played by Shah Rukh Khan in the film. Although Aditya Chopra disagreed, the scene was included in the film.

“I was shooting that sequence. I was on a snowy location and Aditya Chopra called me.
And then he said, ‘I’ve been thinking about it seriously for the last few days. I don’t think they should have sex. I think India will not accept that. Aditya told me, ‘They should try and back off because they feel guilty about it,'” Karan Johar revealed during journalist Anupama Chopra’s All About Movies podcast.

Rani Mukherjee said that the divorce rate has increased after the release of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. Rani was speaking at an event held as part of the 54th International Film Festival in Goa.

“It is very important to talk about a woman’s desires and her choices. Just because your husband doesn’t hit you doesn’t mean he’s ‘good in bed’ or that you’re in love with him.

A woman is never asked, ‘Are you attracted to this man?’ Or not allowed to do so. In fact, Karan Johar dared to make such a film at a time when he was not sure what was going on,” Rani Mukherjee said about the film.
