D66 leader Kaag calls on party members to take the initiative to end the division in society. Kaag spoke at the party congress in Den Bosch about the need to break the “vicious circle of polarization in society” and the fragmentation in politics.
The D66 conference was held digitally because of the increasing corona infections. Kaags closed the meeting with her speech. She said that the “hardening, the roughening, the artificial, inflated contradictions and the aggression that goes with it” worry her. In her speech, she did not come up with concrete proposals as to what exactly the D66 politicians should do about this.
She pointed out the threat to nurses, scientists, journalists. Politics also contributes to the hardening, according to Kaag: “The House and the Cabinet keep themselves trapped in a hamster wheel of hypes.”
‘Don’t know if formation succeeds’
Kaag briefly commented on the formation. She repeated that she thought it was in the national interest to participate in a cabinet formation with VVD, CDA and the ChristenUnie because of the resulting impasse. She said she does not know whether the cabinet negotiations will be concluded. “We either do it right or we don’t.”
