Ka-52 Helicopter Shot Down in Ukraine – Ejection System Copied from Sikorsky: Details Revealed

Last week another Ka-52 was shot down in Ukraine. This became known from the Russian military correspondents, who reported the successful ejection of the pilots.

Details

The attack helicopter is equipped with the L-370 Vitebsk complex, designed to fix anti-aircraft missiles and laser radiation. It is able to automatically launch heat traps and change the trajectory of missiles using optoelectronic oppression.

In fact, the complex does not work as well as the manufacturer declares. In this regard, Russian military correspondents often brag about the “analog-out” ejection system. However, they never indicate that it was copied from Sikorsky.

In the 70s, a North American company introduced the S-72 experimental vehicle. It was a hybrid of a helicopter and an airplane. The S-72 received a large wing and two additional turboprops. In 1978, Sikorsky engineers installed an ejection system into the helicopter. The Ka-52 was developed in the 70s. The Soviet helicopter took to the skies for the first time in 1982. Thus, the ejection system was copied by the designers from Sikorsky.

On mass-produced helicopters in the USA, the ejection system has never been installed due to low efficiency. The fact is that, unlike aircraft, where the pilot ejects along with the seat, while receiving a compression injury to the spine, in a helicopter, the ejection system shoots only the back of the seat. Thus, the chances of getting seriously injured are markedly increased.
