The K-Pop newcomers Aespa have broken a new record with their third single: their video for “Next Level” was clicked 100 million times on YouTube within 32 days. In doing so, they outbid themselves: their debut song “Black Mamba” held the record so far for the video by a K-Pop newcomer group, which received 100 million views the fastest. They had previously achieved this milestone in 52 days.
With “Next Level” the singers have now surpassed their top performance by another twenty days. The group’s current single is a mash-up of the soundtrack for “FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW”.
Aespa members – Karina, Winter, Giselle and Ningning – are between 18 and 20 years old and come from South Korea, China and Japan. They are the current newcomers to SM Entertainment, the entertainment company to which groups like EXO, Shinee, NCT, SuperM and Red Velvet are also under contract.
Aespa: part of the multimedia “SM Culture Universe”
The name of the group Aespa, also written as æspa, is a suitcase word made up of “æ”, which stands for “Avatar Experience” and “Aspect”, which describes the two-sidedness of the group: its existence in the real and the virtual world. Because Aespa are part of the “SM Culture Universe” project – a project in which various K-Pop groups in the company are given their own storylines and universes. These come together at the end and cross each other – similar to Marvel.
With their “Culture Universe”, SM Entertainment combine music videos with anime, video games, virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence. “Next Level” takes place in a futuristic, digital universe in which each of the four members appears together with their avatar: ae-Karina, ae-Winter, ae-Giselle and ae-Ningning. The digital images of the singers live in a virtual apartment. Aespa members can contact them at any time through messages and calls.
