K.J. Shine: The Shining Star in Ernakulam Lok Sabha Constituency

Most influential Lok Sabha constituency for Congress; That’s how you start talking about Ernakulam. After Sebastian Paul, there are no leftist candidates in the constituency. This time, the left’s move to win back the constituency in the Lok Sabha elections reached KJ Shine; In Paravoor’s Shine Teacher.

KSTM State Committee Member Shine Teacher UDF, V.D. He won three times from Satheesan’s constituency. In the same way, the Left estimates that the teacher from Ernakulam will win the Lok Sabha over the UDF by using the minority communal equations. The Shine teacher is preparing for Kanniyangam with the firm belief that all 20 Lok Sabha constituencies will go in favor of the Left.

∙ The media accepted your candidature as CPM’s surprise candidate for Ernakulam. Was the candidate surprised?

I am a political activist who is active in elections. Therefore, candidacy is seen as a part of political activity, a part of election activities. At the same time, being surprised is a reality.

∙ He has been a member of North Paravur Municipal Council for the last three terms. Shine Teacher is an active presence in the cultural and political arena of North Paravur. Candidacy is also recognition for operational excellence?

Let us examine the natural experience of political action. The left considers any candidate in the light of its social experience. I have had the opportunity to become a representative of the people three times. I have more than 25 years of working experience in the field of People’s Representative or even Public Works.

He was a part of the student movement and other youth movements. Did teacher organization work and other social activities. I loved such social activities even if they were small. When checking in this way, the party must have considered me as someone who can be a candidate in many ways

∙ He has been a member of North Paravur Municipal Council for the last three terms. It was the leading spaces in the UDF. Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency is similarly calculated. How challenging will the fight be?

If we look at today’s Indian politics and Kerala politics, permanent seat is an outdated argument. If we check since the assembly elections in Kerala, there has been a style saying that many seats from Vattyoorkao belong to the UDF. People have corrected and shown that it is not so.

In my experience, even if it is in a small space, it seems that people have not understood things like that. People generally adopt the method of taking favorable decisions according to the changing political situation. Therefore, it is not a way of subjugating any party. It is believed that people will think and vote in favor of LDF.

∙ This is the first Lok Sabha election after the Women’s Reservation Act. Kanni is entering the Lok Sabha elections as one of the two women candidates of CPM?

Equality is one of the ideals of the left as it molds progressive society as we know it. Today society considers women as second class citizens. Women and Dalits are suffering from it. This candidature points out that while the country itself verbally accepts that women should be uplifted as women, in practical terms CPM and Left Front are upholding it and moving forward.

If we take the LDF as a whole, women are contesting in three out of twenty seats. The message it gives to the society and the women’s community is that women can also participate in the social legislative activities. Kerala has already proved that. It started from 33 percent and went up to 62 percent. Women are very good at governance. All this happened when the left government came. As a continuation of that, there are measures to increase the empowerment of women in higher democratic platforms. This is a progressive step that only leftist movements can take.

∙ This time BJP is looking at Kerala with great hope. The Prime Minister’s frequent visits to Kerala are interpreted as part of it. Won’t BJP give a strong contest in Kerala?

They created an even bigger ruckus in the last Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Especially in the last Lok Sabha elections. Kerala is a place where BJP has tried and failed to achieve communal appeasement. There were situations in the last election that they could take advantage of, including Sabarimala.

Keralites see politics as human service. The last election proved exactly that. Kerala is a model politically enlightened state in all respects, therefore the people of Kerala firmly believe that they will not give any kind of root to communal movements.

∙ After the announcement of the candidate, he went to the people… What is the reaction of the people?

Ankamari and before… K.J.Shine speaks at the inauguration of Urban Health and Wellness Center of Paravur Municipality held yesterday morning. Inaugural Highby Eden MP on stage. The information about Shine becoming a candidate came out in the evening.

There is a great deal of concern in people’s minds. People in general are worried that if there is a riotous atmosphere in the society, no human being will be able to live peacefully here. Answering that is an important responsibility in this election. The people have hope that the right answer to that concern is the Left Democratic Front.

In the last Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had given hope to the people to a large extent. That is how Congress won by winning 19 seats. But Congress has taken a soft Hindutva approach for the last five years. Rahul Gandhi would become the prime minister and Kerala was given a lot of hope that he could save the country from the fascist regime. But not only is it futile, but their approach all over India is such that Congress cannot be trusted.

Opportunistic politics born as Congress and transformed into BJP is seen. It is a situation that people have understood through experience. So from the little experience I have got, all the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies will go in favor of the Left.

∙ K.J. The name Shine is well known in North Paravur and Ernakulam district. But people outside the district looked at the teacher with great curiosity. There were those among them who wondered who was KJ Shine?

I was born and brought up in a village near Paravur called Gothurut. His schooling was at St. Sebastian’s School. He did his pre-degree from St. Thomas College, Kodungallur and his degree from Tampuran College, Kunjikuttan. He was involved in church activities at a very young age. Wherever there is a possibility of a social interaction in my surroundings I have worked. It was the teachers and leaders of my country who brought me to social work. When he came to college, he worked as a part of SFI. After becoming a teacher, I was able to work at the lower levels of the teachers’ movement because I had the love of social work within me.

The 32-day strike of teachers in 2002 has brought me to a vigorous social work. After that he started working in state leadership, committee and general politics. Used to speak at programs for women empowerment activities. I love preaching. Joined the party since 2000. It was during this time that I got the opportunity to become a people’s representative from North Paravur. Won three times. He is a person who believes that women should rise. One who has expressed and argued for such an idea in any movement. And so it shall be. It will continue until death. This candidacy is the chance that I got in the meantime.

∙ Shine teacher’s speech is famous?

He will go wherever he is called to preach. I have gone to Thrissur and Kottayam to preach. No claim to be the best orator. I present things in my own words if given the opportunity. Reading gives confidence for speaking. We can express not only if we have the resources.

∙ Do teaching and politics go together easily?

Teaching and politics are not two. Teaching is political activity itself. Politics is the overall development of the people of the country. It is their freedom. Theirs is an egalitarian life. It is an ability to think. It is the growth of the mind to engage without discrimination. In that way, I have a view that teaching is different and politics is different.

∙ I am asking out of curiosity, which subject was taught by the teacher? Was the children’s favorite teacher?

She was a UP section teacher. Social science was taught. You have to ask the children themselves if she was their favorite teacher (laughs).

∙ Did you say that the purpose of life is the upliftment of women? If you win as a candidate, what will be the plans envisaged for women?

Employment is an important issue. There are working housewives. Mechanisms are essential to address their stressors while commuting to work. Women should understand that they too are a part of this society. Although women are employed, most of them carry patriarchal values. The demand for representation in the Legislative Assembly and Parliament will be raised at every opportunity and work will be done for it. We will work together for measures to combat violence against women. It is the insatiable desire of my heart.

∙ How challenging is public work for a woman? How actively will she be able to immerse herself in society and people’s problems amid the distractions of family, children, and the kitchen?

If you want to rise in any field, you have to take up the challenges in that field without distinction between men and women. Men also face challenges both in the political movement and in the general movement. But being a woman has to face two kinds of challenges. Society has assigned a woman’s place to be inside the house. We consider it as the social responsibility of women. It is a situation full of social agencies that teach precisely that the public sphere is not yours.

But even then we can see some light rays in this region. Some individuals and organizations are giving us the opportunity. Use it correctly. Life is a struggle. There can be many things holding us back. If we ignore it, we cannot move forward. I have applied it in my life. There have been many experiences that are often overwhelming. All that time there have been mental conflicts. I had the strength to overcome all those mental conflicts at a young age. My father has inspired me the most. It is my father who has often told me that girls should step up.

Father Joseph was well read. When I was young, I often wondered why my father used to argue like this after listening to his political debates. But we three sisters have got the strength of growing up. Strongly oppose what you think is wrong. Whether it is power or anything else that is lost in the name of it, we do not count it. It is possible to progress only if you go forward like that.

∙ Who is your role model among women leaders?

KR How many people can we make role models from Gouriamma to here. Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister. Shailaja Teacher and Ani Raja are brilliant symbols of strength for women to grow.
