The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has captured mesmerizing images of the final stages in the life of a distant star, showing an unprecedented level of detail of the glowing gas structure known as the Ring Nebula.
About 2,600 light-years from Earth, the nebula was born from a dying star that has expelled its outer layers into space, and scientists say the images can provide key insights into the life cycles of stars.
Dr Mike Barlow, co-leader of the team of astronomers who released the images, said: “Besides the intricate details of the nebula’s expanding colorful crust, the images also reveal the inner region around the central white dwarf with remarkable clarity.
He added, “We are witnessing the last chapters of the star’s life, and a preview of the distant sun’s future, so to speak, and the JWST observations have opened a new window for understanding these amazing cosmic events.”
And he continued: “We can use the ring nebula as our own laboratory to study how planetary nebulae form and develop, and the so-called planetary nebulae is a misnomer dating back to the eighteenth century, when astronomer William Herschel misunderstood the curved shapes of those planets.”
The Ring Nebula is a well-known planetary nebula. Found in the constellation Lyra, it can be seen throughout the summer. It formed when a dying star blasted much of its matter into space, producing a variety of patterns, glowing rings and faint clouds that appear to ripple outward.
“We are amazed at the detail in the images, better than we have seen before,” said Albert Ziegelstra, professor of astrophysics at the University of Manchester.
