JVLMA Symphony Orchestra and Big Band will end the concert season with works by American composers and modern jazz / Article

At 18.00 in the Great Hall of JVLMA the concert program of the symphony orchestra “The Temptation of America” will be performed, in which the orchestra will play together with a jazz trio and a trumpet soloist. The repertoire includes works by American composers such as 20th-century composers Samuel Barber (“The Unanswered Question” for Adagio String Instruments), George Gershwin (for piano at Major Fa), and contemporary composer Kevin McKee. Centennial Horizon “).

“The idea for a concert of a composition by American authors for the orchestra originated exactly 2 years ago, when its implementation was stopped by a pandemic,” said Kaspars Ādamsons, the artistic director of the JVLMA Symphony Orchestra. “At the time, we concluded that our orchestra has so far included little American work in its repertoire. It is important for me, as the conductor of the orchestra, to offer students an iconic and traditional repertoire. “

Together with the symphony orchestra, the soloist – trumpet player Mārtiņš Zujs and the jazz trio – Matīss Žilinskis (piano), Toms Kursītis (double bass) and Sigvards Dižais (percussion) will play in the concert.

At 19.00, a concert by JVLMA and the Riga Dome Choir School (RDKS) led by Finnish conductor Jere Laukanen will play in a concert dedicated to Jazz Day at the Riga Art Space. It will feature original compositions by the world-renowned Finnish composer Jere Laukanen, which he has composed for his orchestra “Jere Laukkanen Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra” and “European Jazz Orchestra”, as well as his arrangements. The concert repertoire combines modern jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms.

“The compositions are quite complicated due to both the fast pace and the tact, and it is quite a challenge for the musicians to play such a repertoire,” said Djis Jurka, the artistic director of the JVLMA and RDKS big band, who also invited the Finnish musician to collaborate with the Latvian big band.

Jere Laukkanen has collaborated and collaborates not only with the above-mentioned orchestras, but also with the UMO Jazz Orchestra (Finland), the Berklee Jazz Composers’ Big Band (USA), the Big Band Conservatori del Liceu (Spain) ), Estonian Dream Big Band (Estonia) and other big bands around the world. He is an internationally recognized jazz teacher who has headed the Jazz Department at the Metropolia University of Finland for many years. Laukanens will also be at the conductor’s desk at the concert in Riga.

The special guest of the concert dedicated to Jazz Day will be saxophonist, clarinetist, head of the JVLMA Jazz Department Indrikis Veitners.
