Double award for creative scope
“The work of a composer is the work of a hermit, and pedagogy makes up for it wonderfully,” reveals Jānis Petraškevičs, assistant professor of the Department of Composition at JVLMA, and adds: “If the composer’s award is an excellent performance, then the teacher’s award is the success of students and the evaluation of colleagues. I am happy to receive both!”
The year 2023 was productive and full of bright events for the composer, both in his teaching and creative life, and in both areas, both in Latvia and abroad. J. Petraškevičs visited the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece, as well as the Estonian Academy of Music in Tallinn as a master class leader. The central creative event of Petraškevich’s past year as a composer was a residency at the contemporary music festival AFEKT in Estonia, where his compositions were played Rites of Order, Dead Wind and The quiet voice. On the other hand, the clarinet concert Long Walks was nominated for the Great Music Award. “He has an extraordinary, fresh view of contemporary music, and each of his new opus becomes an event,” JVLMA rector, professor Guntars Prānis describes the contribution of J. Petraškevich.
It is important to be appreciated
“I am very grateful for the evaluation of my work and that of my persistent teachers. Such moments for an artist, when you realize that your work is seen and recognized, are especially important, because it gives you the inspiration to work further,” admits the young pianist Daniil Mickevičs, who is learning the piano from Professor Sergej Osokina. In 2023, D. Mickevičs won 1st place in the 8th Jázeps Vītolas International Piano Competition, as well as a special prize – a scholarship Fireworks for piano academy master classes in Einbeck, Germany. Last year, he also participated with a bright performance at the European Opera Academy in Florence, Italy, at the Piano Academy Glafsfjordens Winter Piano Academy 2023 and master classes with professor Pavel Nersesyan and Julia Mustonen-Dahklviste in Arvik, Sweden, concerts at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theater in Tallinn and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in the project Crossing Keybords and in other events. The pianist reveals that his next concert is the musical brunch scheduled for January 21 in the concert hall Artissimowhere he will play romantic piano miniatures.
Chorus conductor Artūrs Švartsbach, who studies in the class of associate professor Andras Veismāns, is happy about the award and says: “During the last years, I had received more recognition abroad than in Latvia. That is why I feel a great sense of satisfaction that my work and success are also appreciated at home. Of course, without the support of my teachers, I would not have achieved so much in the last years, so I am very grateful to the lecturers and professors of JVLMA, especially to my specialty professor Andris Veismanis.”
Last year, A. Schwarzbach won 1st place and three special prizes in the international choral conducting competition Aegis Carminis in Slovenia. He has sung not only with all Latvian professional choirs, but also with the Swedish Radio Choir and the Norwegian Soloist Choir. Last year Artūrs stood at the conductor’s desk in the Vidzeme Concert Hall, conducting the Vidzeme Chamber Orchestra in the Vidzeme Talents for the Family concert, and also participated in the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Switzerland, staging Gustav Mahler’s 2nd Symphony together with Zurich Singing Academy. Asked to reveal his future plans, A. Schwartzbach states that his last semester of bachelor’s studies has begun and due to the load of exams he has agreed to much fewer projects than usual. But the list is still impressive. “Currently, the nearest scheduled concerts are on March 1, 2 and 3 in Amsterdam, where the Chamber Choir Cappella Amsterdam I will perform Arvo Perta in the lineup Kanon Pokajanen. On March 30, I will be heard in Latvia – together with a chamber choir Ave Sol, The Vidzeme Chamber Orchestra and conductor Andri Veismani will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Jānis Passion. I will perform as a bass soloist in this concert. In parallel with these projects, together with the symphonic orchestra of Riga 6th secondary school and an ensemble of invited soloists, we plan to stage Benjamin Britten’s opera Noah’s Ark. I will be the artistic director of this production.”
The JVLMA Annual Award was established in 2004. Initially, it was awarded to the students of the Academy of Music for their creative activity and outstanding success in music, but since 2005 – also to the teaching staff of the Academy for their excellent teaching and creative work.
