As the Juventus women’s section has just completed its season and won its fourth Scudetto immediately, it was time to take stock of this team which continues to dominate women’s football on the other side of the Alps. From its creation in July 2017 to its title of champion of Italy this year with 22 victories in as many matches, return to this Juventus Women dominating in the peninsula but not yet conquering on the continent.
The installation of a hegemony over Italian women’s football
The project of the women’s section of Juventus begins on July 1, 2017. While the Italian Football Federation offers the possibility to professional clubs to buy licenses for women’s teams, the Turin management decides to embark on the adventure. The Old Lady is thus interested in the acquisition of the women’s club of Cuneo, a city located about a hundred kilometers from Turin, which wishes to give up its professional status. The objective of the FIGC is thus to allow the development of women’s football in Italy by promoting the emergence of a team in the biggest clubs of the peninsula.
Thanks to this buyout, Juventus Women can compete in Serie A from the 2017/2018 season. This first exercise is a total success for the Boyfriend of Italy since the Black and white win the Scudetto tied on points with the prestigious Brescia team. Turin’s hegemony is launched since three more will follow badges, a Italian Cup as well as two Super Cups between 2018 and 2021.
The main actresses of Juventus Women
To ensure this national domination, the leaders of Juventus have recruited the key people to lead such a project which is supposed to revolutionize Italian women’s football. Important actresses who have enabled the female section of Turin to secure exceptional growth in just four years of existence.
In the first place we can cite the coach Rita Guarino present since the creation of the club in the summer of 2017. Under her orders, the girls of Juventus have won no less than seven titles in four seasons, four of which badges (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021), a Cup (2019) and two Super Cups (2019, 2020). With Rita Guarino, the Turinese players have won 92 matches in 111 games played while scoring an average of three goals per game for a total of 339 goals scored for only 66 goals conceded. Throughout her time on the side of the Old Lady, Rita Guarino was particularly noted for her character as a leader and her important contribution to the daily work which made it possible to professionalize the players.
If we were to note important players, it is essential to quote the Italian internationals of the team who notably shone at the 2019 World Cup in France. Among them, the defender Sara Gama accompanied by her goalkeeper Giuliani also arrived in 2017 who managed the feat of not conceding a goal in fifty matches in all competitions. With its two players the team has managed to be the best defense in the championship in the last four years. Other players like Galli or Bonansea were also important elements of the squad.
From national domination to continental conquest?
While at the national level the feminine Juventus seems untouchable, the conquest of Europe seems more complicated. Indeed, in three seasons of Champions, Juventus has never managed to go beyond the round of 16 by being eliminated by Brondby, FC Barcelona and Olympique Lyonnais.
After winning the Scudetto, Turin management has said it wants to make Juventus Women a flagship team in European women’s football. Unfortunately to achieve this goal it will be necessary to compensate for the departure of coach Rita Guarino and Giuliani from the club. Forward Bonansea, who became the first player to enter the Raiola team, is also keen to experience a foreign league as her contract ends this summer.
Despite exponential growth, Juventus Women will still have to work hard if they are to reach new continental heights.
