The Juventus midfielder, Nicolò Fagioli, is under investigation by the Turin Prosecutor’s Office, which in recent months has turned the spotlight on a round of betting (sports and otherwise) on online platforms. The 2001 born native of Piacenza would have accessed some illegal sites: this complicates his position. The file is in the hands of the public prosecutor Manuela Pedrotta.
The investigation into Fagioli was revealed by La Stampa on newsstands this morning. The Turin newspaper explains that the investigators of the Turin flying squad have investigated the accesses and cross-referenced data and transactions. Ending up also identifying users. Fagioli is registered in the register of suspects together with other alleged bettors. The crime is gambling on illegal platforms. Generally it ends with an oblation, or the payment of a fine that extinguishes the crime. The federal law, however, makes explicit reference to betting: for footballers there is an obligation to report it. But above all: every member is expressly prohibited from betting in any way in order to make a profit. The FIGC has known everything since August 30th. The report was forwarded by the player’s lawyers. Giuseppe Chiné’s sports prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation.
“There is a ban on subjects of federal law, managers, members and members of companies belonging to the professional sector from placing or accepting bets, directly or indirectly, even from subjects authorized to receive them, which have as their object results relating to official meetings organized within the FIGC, FIFA and UEFA” [articolo 24 del Codice di giustizia sportiva]
What risks Fagioli as a footballer
If actual betting activity in football were to occur – in accordance with article 24 of the Code of Sports Justice – the player would face a sanction foreseen by the ban or a disqualification of up to 3 years. Plus a fine starting from 25 thousand euros. The FIGC Prosecutor’s Office, already informed of the proceedings, is following the evolution of the matter with extreme attention.
