Juventus Falls 2-4 to Sassuolo in Serie A Match at Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia

Reggio Emilia

Juventus fell 2-4 to Sassuolo in the fifth week of Serie A this season. The Bianconeri never took the lead from the start of the match and were punished by a number of fatal blunders.

Playing at Mapei Stadium, Saturday (23/9/2023), the hosts took the lead in the 13th minute through Armand Lauriente’s shot, but Juventus equalized eight minutes later via Matias Vina’s own goal.

Domenico Berardi put the hosts back in front towards the end of the first half, but Federico Chiesa’s shot in the 78th minute changed the score to 2-2. When Juventus felt they had the momentum to rise, Sassuolo gave a penalty.

Andrea Pinamonti’s header and Federico Gatti’s own goal ensured Sassuolo won 4-2. This result meant that Juventus failed to climb to the top of the standings and was stuck in fourth place with 10 points. Sassuolo moved up to 11th with six points.

The course of the match

Juventus threatened with Adrien Rabiot’s header in the 3rd minute after receiving Federico Chiesa’s cross, but it bounced over the goal. The French midfielder had another chance five minutes later, but his long-range shot went wide.

Even though they took the initiative to attack, Juventus conceded first in the 13th minute. Armand Lauriente’s long-range shot failed to be parried well by Bianconeri goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and went into his own net.

However, Juventus immediately got up and managed to equalize the score in the 21st minute. Sassuolo defender Matias Vina tried to block Chiesa’s cross towards Weston McKennie in the penalty box, but the ball rolled into Alessio Cragno’s goal.

Sassuolo had another good chance in the 34th minute, but Domenico Berardi’s shot in the penalty box was saved by Szczesny. Ruan Tressoldi’s header four minutes later was also saved by the Polish goalkeeper.

However, Szczesny was unable to block Berardi’s first-time shot in the 41st minute, which started from Matheus Henrique’s success in cutting off Federico Gatti’s pass, resulting in a counter-attack. Score 2-1 closed the first half.

In the second half, Juventus only managed to equalize the score in the 78th minute. Timothy Weah’s cross from the right was blocked by Martin Erlic, but the wild ball was controlled by Nicolo Fagioli who then fed Chiesa who was standing free.

The 25-year-old striker’s hard shot hit a Sassuolo player and turned into the left corner of the goal without Cragno being able to block it. The score was 2-2, but only lasted three minutes.

Starting from Lauriente’s shot which was parried by Szczesny, Andrea Pinamonti grabbed the tipped ball with a header which glided smoothly into the Juventus goal. The hosts, for the third time, went back to winning 3-2.

Juventus tried to equalize the score in the remaining time, but instead conceded again in injury time. Gatti, who received Szczesny’s pass, was under pressure from Henrique until he finally made the wrong pass and sent the ball into his own net.
