Juventus Confirms Intent to Leave Super League Amidst UEFA Pressure

There may soon be only one left. Launched in April 2021 by twelve rebellious clubs, the project of Super League quickly fell apart with the withdrawal of nine teams. For almost two years, there are only three giants of continental football involved in this initiative: Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Juventus.

However, according to information published on Tuesday by the media AS et Brand, the bianconero club communicated to the two Iberian rivals their intention to leave the Super League via a letter sent by its general manager Maurizio Scanavino. Despite the launch of a new version of the competition by the company A22 Sports Management in February 2023, the project dedicated to supplanting the Champions League and the competitions organized by UEFA once again finds itself in difficulty.

UEFA behind potential Juve withdrawal?

Sanctioned by Italian sports authorities for fraudulent accounts, Juventus did not want to alienate UEFA. According to the elements sent by the Turin general manager to Barça and Real in his letter to announce the desire to withdraw from the Super League, UEFA threatened to exclude the recent seventh in Serie A from all European competitions for five years.

Fiercely opposed to the Super League, the body chaired by Alexander Ceferin therefore seems to have gone into high gear by putting pressure on the last members of the project.

In order to resolve the legal issues of a withdrawal from the Juventusthe withdrawal of the Piedmontese team could be completed in a few weeks according to the Spanish media.

Major member of the Super League in April 2021, and in particular because of the role played by the former Turin boss Andrea Agnelli, the Old Lady now seems to want to focus on her return to the sporting forefront. Even if it means abandoning the Super League project.

Juve confirm desire to leave Super League but deny UEFA threats

After the publication of elements around a disengagement of the Bianconeri in the Spanish press, Juventus officially spoke on the subject. In a press release published on its sitethe Piedmontese club has confirmed that it has written to Real Madrid and FC Barcelona to inform them of its intention to leave the Super League.

“Referring to the rumors that appeared in the press today, Juventus informs that it has sent a communication to the two other clubs which, like Juventus, have not exercised their withdrawal from the Super League project in order to engage a period of discussion between the three clubs regarding Juventus’ possible exit from the Super League project, Juve said in their statement. The club will proceed with any communication under the law following the outcome of the discussions and assessments regarding the above, stating that many of the elements reported by the press regarding the content of the communication (including any reference to alleged threats of possible sanctions by UEFA) are not true.”
