RMC knows a little more about when the Champions League could resume in August.
Jean-Michel Aulas confirms this in L’Equipe. “Today UEFA maintains its Champions League finals in August”, says the president ofOlympique Lyonnais, who attended a meeting of ECA, the European Association of Clubs, on Wednesday morning.
While the Bundesliga now knows it will resume on May 15, the post-coronavirus C1 may kick off on Saturday August 8. This is the date on which UEFA plans to organize the round of 16 return between Olympique Lyonnais and Juventus, according to RMC. The meeting could therefore take place on a Saturday evening, which would confirm that UEFA intends to use as many dates as possible.
PSG could play on Monday
For the quarter-finals, they would take place very quickly after. As for PSG, UEFA is said to be considering three dates: August 10, 11 or 12. Either a Monday (which would be a first), a Tuesday or a Wednesday. The programming would of course depend on the identity of the opponent’s PSG: if it is one of the four clubs that will have qualified the previous weekend, or one of the three other clubs which already has its ticket for the quarters in pocket (Atlético, Leipzig, Atalanta).
RMC added that it is still too early to know if the quarter-finals will be in a dry match, or in the traditional format (round trip). In the case of round-trip matches, French clubs should not be forced to play their home matches abroad, as feared by PSG. In August, it should be possible to organize matches behind closed doors in France.
