The 10th and 12th Vice Presidents of the Republic of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla (JK) spoke about a suitable candidate for vice president (cawapres) to accompany Anies Baswedan. JK said that the General Chairperson of the Democratic Party Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) had the ability to become a vice presidential candidate.
Initially, JK said that the cawapres for Anies Baswedan was the internal authority of the coalition. Not only that, said JK, Anies Baswedan also has the authority to determine who will accompany him in the 2024 presidential election.
“Technically and in this way, it is the authority of the coalition and the presidential candidate,” said JK after meeting with AHY at his residence on Jalan Brawijaya, South Jakarta, Monday (15/5 2023).
JK then said AHY had the ability to become a cawapres. Nevertheless, said JK, regarding the cawapres for Anies is the authority of the coalition.
“Pak AHY definitely has that ability and of course there are considerations here. I’m outside the authority of the political party coalition itself and also the presidential candidate,” said JK.
On the same occasion, AHY said the one-hour meeting with JK discussed national issues. AHY said that JK also gave many views as a statesman who had been the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia twice.
“I came this evening with the intention of continuing friendship but also getting his views as a national figure, a statesman who had been Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia twice, with President SBY and also accompanied President Jokowi,” he said.
“Therefore, of course as politicians today, we also want to listen to views including discussing various issues, and that was very good,” he added.
AHY said the meeting with JK today did not discuss the cawapres. “But earlier there was no discussion specifically about it, what is clear is that we are discussing Indonesia in the future,” he said.
Anies about the vice president
The presidential candidate from the Coalition for Change for Unity (KPP) Anies Baswedan said the cawapres who will accompany him must be in one coalition. Anies said that if there is a proposal for a vice presidential candidate from another party, then he must join the coalition first.
“If there are aspirations to nominate someone from his party, then his party must be part of the coalition,” said Anies at the PKS DPP, South Jakarta, Saturday (6/5).
“If you don’t become part of a coalition, it’s not fair. It’s a very simple principle,” he said.
According to Anies, those who will accompany him should be in the same coalition. Anies said that if one is in a coalition, then the possibility of being considered is greater.
“If it is related to party leaders or party members, then those who are in the coalition will automatically,” said Anies.
