“Yesterday we received tragic news. It was with great sadness and great regret that we received the information about the tragic death of our former competitor, colleague, friend – Justyna Burska. This is an unimaginable tragedy that we will not be able to accept and come to terms with for a long time. Forgive me, but we are unable to write anything more today,” wrote UKS Piątka Konstantynów Łódzki, for whom she played in the past. Shortly afterwards, this was also confirmed by the Polish Swimming Association.

“It is with deep sadness and regret that we received the news of the tragic death of Justyna Burska. She was a competitor of Piątka Konstantynów Łódzki and AZS UWM Olsztyn. She had many medals in the Polish Championships under her belt – both in the pool and in open water. She competed in the World and European Championships in long-distance swimming, and also represented our country at the Universiade. After ending her swimming career, she began working as a coach and instructor to pass on her passion for sports to others. She was only 29 years old. Joining in the mourning and sadness, we express our sincerest condolences to her family and loved ones,” reads their statement.

The swimportal.pl portal wrote about the background of what happened on its Facebook profile. “Justyna Burska. There are no words that can describe it. Yesterday, late in the afternoon, she was riding her motorbike. Someone didn’t notice her. They drove off, even though they shouldn’t have. Justyna Burska. A great Polish athlete. A wonderful coach. A good, ordinary person,” we read in their post.

Paweł Słomiński, former coach of the famous Otylia Jędrzejczak and former president of the Polish Swimming Association, also published a short commentary after this sad news. “Very sad news for all of us,” he said in a few words on his Facebook profile.

Justyna Burska was a multiple Polish champion and participant of the world championships

Justyna Burska was born in 1995. In her career, she has won medals at Polish swimming championships many times, including open water swimming. She has also represented our country at international competitions. In 2019, she took part in the world championships in South Korea, where she competed in two distances: 5 km and 10 km. She also competed in the European championships.

She ended her competitive career a few years ago and moved to Olsztyn. That’s when she started working as a swimming coach and instructor. She worked with local clubs. “When working with young (and also slightly younger) swimming enthusiasts, I focus on technique, which helps reduce the risk of injury, especially at the initial stage of learning. […] A sense of humor is an essential element of every swimming training session, so when you come to training, expect a good atmosphere and a sincere smile,” Burska wrote on her website.
