JUstin Verlander finally made his debut with the New York Mets (16-16), but the result was not as expected as the Detroit Tigers (13-17) beat them 2-0 at Comerica Park in front of 18,369 fans.
The 40-year veteran suffered a strained right arm that kept him out of major league play for the first month of the 2023 season. After pitching 4.2 innings at the Mets’ outfield, the organization determined he was ready to come back.
Mets starter he pitched five complete innings and allowed two home runs, both of which were the victory for the Tigers. In all, he threw 79 pitches, faced 20 batters and struck out only five of them.
The Detroit homers were by Riley Greene and Javier Baez on the first roll. The Tigers’ center fielder hit his third home run of the season and the Puerto Rican infielder recorded HRs in back-to-back games after failing to connect in the first 90 at-bats of the season.
