Justin Verlander: Return to Houston Astros and his Impressive MLB Career

Justin Verlander is one of the best pitchers in Major League history and his three Cy Young Awards confirm it. Unfortunately, his time with the New York Mets was short-lived after signing a two-year, $86.6 million deal as he will return to one of his former teams under the 2023 MLB season trade deadline.

Mark Feinsand, de MLB.com, reported that the Astros have reached an agreement with the Mets to acquire Verlander. Houston’s ninth sent prospects Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford, both outfielders. Both Gilbert and Clifford have yet to make their major league debuts.

The right-handed pitcher has made 16 starts for the Mets and is 6-5 with a 3.15 ERA. The 2011 AL MVP has 81 strikeouts and has allowed just 33 innings in 94.1 innings. Verlander, 40, missed the first few weeks of the season with a strained shoulder muscle.

The Mets have accepted failure in 2023 and Verlander became the third starting pitcher traded in less than two weeks. The first was David Robertson for the Miami Marlins and the second was Max Scherzer for the Texas Rangers.
