As part of a health reform in Canada, the government will cover all costs of contraception for women, the government states. Now they have to get the provinces on the team.

The government says it will pay for the most common forms of contraception, including the IUD, the pill, the contraceptive stick and the contraceptive pill, for nine million women of childbearing age, says Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Women should be free to choose the contraception they need without the costs standing in the way. So we make contraception free, says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau X/Twitter.

The free birth control proposal is part of a reform announced in February that will also cover the cost of diabetes medication for about 3.9 million Canadians. It is not known when the new system will be introduced or how much it will cost.

The provinces are responsible for the public health system in Canada, and the government has yet to convince them. Quebec and Alberta have already said they will not join the new scheme.
