Despite 18 years of marriage and a promise that they will grow old together, the leader splits with his wife Sophie
In 2015, Justin Trudeau followed in his father’s footsteps and became Prime Minister of Canada. Pierre Trudeau, who died in 2000, remains in the country’s history as its 15th prime minister and the first to divorce while still in office.
On Wednesday, Liberal Justin Trudeau proved he’s still very much following his father’s example in life. The Canadian leader has announced that he is separating from his wife Sophie after 18 years of marriage. In doing so, he became the second Canadian prime minister to have his family break up while in office – ranking just behind his father.
In 1977, Pierre Trudeau announced just as suddenly that he was separating from his wife Margaret after 6 years of marriage.
Trudeau, 51, announced the split on Instagram on Wednesday. “Sophie and I would like to share that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have decided to separate. As always, we remain close with deep love and respect for each other and for all that we have built and will continue to build,” the Prime Minister wrote.
The three children of the Canadian leader will continue to live with him, and his wife has already moved out of their home. However, she will visit them often to spend time with them. It will also stay there when the Prime Minister travels on business.
His office confirmed that the two had reached a legal settlement. They also revealed that the couple will maintain a friendly relationship, like even soon
will leave on vacation together
The romance of the Canadian Prime Minister and his wife is worthy of a Hollywood movie. The two met on a playground when they were still small. They fall in love years later when life meets them again. But 18 years later, that tale seems to have lost its magic.
They met when they were children. The former first lady of Canada once studied with the younger brother of the current prime minister.

Their paths diverged as they went to different colleges. However, fate gives them several chance meetings, until finally the two get together. In 2003, they ran into each other at a gala after not having been in touch for years.
After the event, Sophie sends him a message, but doesn’t get a response. Justin later explains that he wasn’t interested in a relationship back then. Months later, however, they meet on the street. They felt another coincidence as a sign of fate. Finally they agreed to go out together.

that he accidentally hit his head on a pole. Even then, even though they had only been in each other’s company for a few hours, he told her that they would spend the rest of their lives together.
Trudeau proposed to her a year later, and in 2005 they got married.
9 years before announcing their separation, the Trudeaus were forced to address rumors of extramarital affairs before he took office. The prime minister then explained that like any married couple, they had their good times but also their hard times. Trudeau said that sometimes his wife hates his job and him because he loves her. “I have a very difficult, stressful job. Everyone knows how challenging it is to balance family obligations with a job that takes me all over the country,” he admitted in 2014. His wife, Sophie, has also been questioned about infidelities in the family. However, she neither denies nor confirms. In an interview, he stated that even if this had happened, it is unlikely that the family would reveal it publicly.
