Justin Trudeau wants to make rentals more equitable and he spoke to Canadians to tell them that they were not going to let them down during this difficult time.
In a video posted on Facebook, the Prime Minister sent a strong message to the population. “If you are a tenant right now, I have news for you,” he says at the start of his video. “The next federal budget will make rental more equitable,” he assures.
“You will be able to know what the previous tenants paid in rent to be able to negotiate a good rent for yourselves,” he indicated.
“We will work with the banks to ensure that what you pay each month in rent counts for your credit score. It’s just not fair that someone who pays $2,000 a month in mortgage gets recognized for that but someone who pays $2,000 in rent doesn’t count toward their credit score. It will help you eventually qualify for your own mortgage and have your own home,” says Justin Trudeau.
“And we are going to give new rights to tenants and offer more protection so that you are not alone in facing bad landlords, renovations or rent increases,” underlines the Prime Minister.
“These changes will make renting fairer and give tenants the boost they need to eventually be able to buy their own home. It’s part of our next budget which will make the housing market fairer for all generations,” he said at the end of his video.
Justin Trudeau’s comments aroused the anger of the Quebec government, indicates the Montreal Journal.
“There is no question of tolerating this new invasion of Quebec’s areas of jurisdiction […]. If the federal government really wants to contribute […]that it reduces temporary immigration, that it reduces the number of asylum seekers at the moment,” said Jean-François Roberge, Quebec Minister of Canadian Relations.
