Justin Sun spoke of “cooperation with Russia” after donating funds to Ukraine

the founder of Tron (TRX), future astronaut and diplomat of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Justin Sun, is “playing both sides” of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, social media users commented, after Sun published what appeared to be news of talks with a senior Russian diplomat.

Sun use his Twitter account in Chinese and his Weibo channel to post news about his recent meeting with Russia’s ambassador to the WTO, Dmitry Lyakishev. Sun himself is Grenada’s ambassador to the WTO.

In the Chinese-language posts, Sun wrote that in a video call with his Russian counterpart, they had discussed ways the technology “could be used for humanitarian cases for Russia’s development,” including “using blockchain technology to help citizens who do not have access to the financial system.” He concluded by writing:

“¡[Nosotros/yo] We look forward to strengthening future cooperation with Russia!”

The post caused no little confusion among Sun supporters, particularly as the Tron founder has been so vocal on social media about his support for Ukraine.

Last month, he posted about how his talks with his Ukrainian counterpart at the WTO had confirmed the addresses for cryptocurrency donations.

And just over a week ago, urged the Tron community to “continue to show how cryptocurrencies can do good”, donating TRX tokens to Ukraine and Ukraine-affiliated charities and celebrating the fact that tron had already been valued at $0.7 million donated.

As well ad that he had made a $200,000 donation to the Ukrainian government in the stablecoin Tether (USDT), through the Tron network.

But his meeting with Russia’s Lyakishev appears to have sown the seeds of confusion. Sun published the post on March 1 and, on Twitter, a user answered asking:

“Has a donkey kicked you in the head? Are you coming out in support of Russia now?

On Weibo, a user wrote:

“Sun is giving money to Ukraine and working with Russia. He’s eating on both sides of the table [un modismo chino que significa “jugar en ambos lados”]”.

Others, perhaps jokingly, claimed that Sun could run for the office of president of the United States, while some celebrated his increasingly prominent role on the world diplomatic stage.

But in China, support for Russia is no laughing matter. On social media platforms like Weibo, publications from the Russian state-funded media outlets regularly attract hundreds of comments supporting “military operations” in Ukraine, with many expressing their support for President Vladimir Putin in glowing terms.
