Justice. Polluted river: € 150,000 fine for ArcelorMittal

A first and a satisfaction

The City of Florange and the urban community of Val de Fensch, at the origin of the complaint, take note of a historic decision. Rémy Dick, mayor of Florange, says his “great satisfaction” and nuance:

“Despite strong and permanent relations in the face of the common development challenges of the ArcelorMittal site in Florange, the elected officials have chosen not to compromise in the face of pollution and to put the living environment of the inhabitants at the heart of public action “.

“This condemnation seems fair and balanced to me,” underlines Michel Liebgott, president of Val de Fensch. “It makes ArcelorMittal a litigant like the others” The heavy fine is “a formal conviction: there was clearly an unwillingness of the group to invest in the coking plant, negligence and abuse. My only regret is that the other episodes of pollution – and when there are seven or eight a year, they are not accidents – have not been taken into account by the courts. But this heavy sentence applies to all the others ”.

ArcelorMittal has not yet reacted to this deliberation.
