The Minister of Justice, Mariano Cúneo Libarona, denied having been a lawyer for drug trafficker Miguel Ángel “Mameluco” Villalba, convicted in multiple trials and imprisoned for his illegal activities in the Buenos Aires suburbs.
“I don’t know him, I never saw him, I don’t know who he is. Absolute error or falsehood,” responded the head of the Justice portfolio, in response to a statement by journalist Carlos Pagni on the La Nación + TV channel.
“He did not confront me, he did not call me to consult me. If he had confronted me with his own newspaper, he would have seen that I have nothing to do with this man, I do not know him,” he insisted, in statements to Radio Rivadavia.
However, the minister admitted that Villalba was defended by another member of the study in which he historically worked until he became head of Justice, his brother Matías Cúneo Libarona.
“More than 15 years ago, Matías my brother – who does not work with me but independently – had a cause from him. A cause,” he remarked.
The four Cúneo Libarona brothers (Mariano, Matías, Rafael and Cristian) work together with other lawyers (some permanent, others occasional) in the firm founded by their father, the namesake of the current minister.
Regarding the situation in Rosario, Cúneo Libarona announced that in the coming days he will travel to join the measures that his Defense and Security counterparts are adopting.
Cúneo Libarona described the homicides of recent days as “a tremendous act against the rule of law” and defined those responsible as “scoundrels.”
“I spoke with the Court two weeks ago. The courts of Rosario as well as those of Misiones ask them for the possibility of giving contracts to employees, they have to have better judicial service, with young flying secretaries who go to work in these courts because they cannot cope with work,” he claimed.
