Justice & Loose Leaf – The Week in Law, Episode 18

Pia Lorenz, Dr. Hendrik Wieduwilt, 12 Aug 2024.

In “Justice & Looseleaf – The Week in Law”the podcast from NJW and beck-aktuellbeck-aktuell editor-in-chief Pia Lorenz and columnist Hendrik Wieduwilt discuss what was important this week in law, legal policy, the legal market and the judiciary – or what they consider to be important.

This week, all of Germany is talking about a rare move: the prisoner exchange with Russia, which also saw the release of the notorious “Tiergarten murderer.” Only the government and the opposition are saying little; even the opposition agreed to the deal. Legal issues hardly seem to play a role anymore. Rightly so?

The vzbv and a US court agree on one thing: tech companies have too much market power. While the United States District Court for the District of Columbia has given the Google group Alphabet a slap in the face under competition law, German consumer advocates are taking action against Meta.

The Federal Constitutional Court has meanwhile presented the reasons for its interim order in the case of Maja T. Maja T. was deported in a literal cloak-and-dagger operation and brought to Hungary – without being given the chance to even consider legal remedies. The Karlsruhe judges have now also criticized this.

Before Justiz & Loseblatt goes into a two-week summer break, Lorenz and Wieduwilt talk about a resourceful Berlin judge who can apparently do more than the police: namely, google. Because such a level of commitment could be expected from German authorities, he overturned a requirement to keep a logbook.
