Just when it snows: patio heating banned in France | Financial

In France, a new climate law came into effect on 1 April, various international media report. It is now prohibited to provide patio heating, even if it runs on green energy. Air conditioning is also no longer allowed if the doors of a building cannot remain closed.

Closed

Only bars, cafes and restaurants that have a fully covered and enclosed terrace are allowed to heat it. Buildings that use heating and air conditioning must now keep their doors closed to save energy. According to environment minister Barbara Pompili, it is wrong for shops to ‘cool the streets’ in the summer with their doors open.

Violation of the new law will result in a fine of up to €1,500 for a person or €7,500 for a legal entity. The fines can add up if someone is caught more often.
