Just a week joining Santos, Robinho instead breaking the contract. Robinho wants to first resolve the alleged rape case.
Robinho was carried off by Santos with a contract duration of five months. Robinho’s return went viral because he earned a monthly salary of 1,500 reais (Rp 4 million), or slightly more than Brazil’s minimum wage of 1,039 reais (Rp. 3.8 million).
However, Robinho’s return was not only busy because of the player’s nominal salary. There is also controversy behind the signing of the contract regarding the criminal case involving Robinho.
One of the club’s sponsors, the dental health company, Orthopride, withdrew its partnership with Santos. Orthopride does not want his image tarnished because Robinho is still considered the perpetrator of rape.
Robinho was sentenced to 9 years in prison by an Italian court in 2017, for the rape he committed in 2013.
The 36-year-old man has not served his sentence because when he knocked on the judge’s hammer, he was in Brazil and there were no extradition rules in that country. This is of course detrimental to Santos financially because they need sponsorship support.
Moreover, Santos is having financial difficulties in the midst of a pandemic like now and has to sell many of his players to cover debts. Therefore, Robinho chose to suspend his contract first as of October 10, to focus on solving the case.
“Santos and Robinho have agreed to postpone the contract agreement that was signed October 10. So that the player can focus fully on his judicial affairs in Italy,” said Santos’s official statement.
This case made Robinho’s career sink even more after being predicted to be a star candidate for the Brazilian national team. After not having success at Real Madrid and Manchester City, Robinho moved clubs before returning to Santos.
“To the Santos fans and those who support me, I prove my innocence,” he said Robinho in his instagram account.
