Just don’t stress: Graz is hoping for a peaceful anniversary

For the first time in 17 years there will be a league duel between Sturm Graz and Grazer AK this Saturday. In the second oldest derby in Austria, the fans of both camps are under observation; they have recently become radicalized.

Sharing stadiums between city rivals is a recurring phenomenon in European football. In Greece, in the 1980s, three teams, AEK, Olympiakos and Panathinaikos, temporarily shared the Athens Olympic Stadium. The reason was that their respective homes were renovated at similar times.

Today there are only a handful of examples of solutions of this kind. The most prominent ones can be found in Italy. AC Milan and Inter Milan have shared their living room in the San Siro since 1947. The capital city teams AS and Lazio moved together to the newly opened Stadio Olimpico in 1953. In Switzerland, both FC Zurich and the Grasshoppers are based at Letzigrund, and in Austria there are also unloved neighbors in the same house.
