After the regional elections in Abruzzo, the definition of “wide field” holds sway to indicate the perimeter of the center-left forces capable of opposing the government team. While Carlo Calenda goes so far as to say: “I’m sick of it” in a radio debate, in Bologna there are those who take pen and paper to write to secretary Elly Schlein. This is done by the president of the historic Bolognina club, that of Achille Occhetto’s turning point, where Schlein herself enrolled in December 2022. Mario Oliva, head of the club, defines himself as “the secretary’s secretary”, in the sense that he is the secretary of the club he belongs to and by virtue of this privileged bond he addresses Schlein directly. “Elly, just call it “campo largo”, it doesn’t sound good to me, it just reminds me of the campo santo – explains Oliva – I absolutely want to propose a new and different definition, let’s move on, there must be an alternative way of calling our group”.
In Bologna the work to unite the center-left of government is a long-standing experience: already in the 1990s the council of the then mayor Walter Vitali became the incubator of the Ulivo, in its ability to keep together the Catholic world and that which it derived from the communist tradition, giving rise to an administrative season full of ideas.

Furthermore, Romano Prodi grew up in a context always characterized by reflection on how to keep together people who profoundly share a vision of the world, even if with important differences, but with a view to creating a competitive and even winning political proposal, on the basis of programs shared. Letta used this expression since his election as secretary of the Democratic Party and had already referred to the concept when he regained his membership in the Democratic Party in 2019, but going back to the origins of this idea, one can find definitions by Goffredo Bettini and even before that by Walter Veltroni.

To win again, a prospect very dear to the PD militants under the Two Towers.
