The pigs most people know today are pink. This is because, like us humans, their veins and blood vessels show through their skin. And that’s why the skin shimmers slightly pink.
But there are also other breeds of pigs. They don’t have that light, almost white skin through which the blood shimmers.
The domestic pig is actually descended from the wild boar, which has dense bristles on rather darker skin. Because it lives outside, the sun “colors” the light skin and makes it darker – like with us humans. Accordingly, wild boar sometimes have lighter, sometimes darker skin. But of course it is never as light as in the pink domestic pigs. You can’t leave these pink pigs in the meadow all day either – experts say they would get sunburnt.
In any case, the domestic pigs, which are kept in stables, were specially bred by humans so that they give as much meat as possible. There are also other pig breeds that look different. However, they have not caught on in mass production.
