Jūrmala Tourism Industry Shifts from Russian to Baltic Visitors Amid Covid-19 and Ukraine Conflict

A few years ago, the Jūrmala hospitality business was completely dependent on Russian vacationers, the number of Belarusian guests was growing rapidly, but the Covid-19 pandemic, and especially the war started by Russia in Ukraine, has significantly changed the situation. Now the industry is mainly supported by local vacationers from the Baltic States.

The number of tourists in Jūrmala is gradually increasing, the number of Baltic people is growing relatively faster, says Aleksandra Stramkale, head of the Jūrmala Municipality Tourism Information Center, predicting a good summer season. She is echoed by the representatives of the newest hotels in the resort town, however, the 2019 figures are not yet expected this summer.
